Novel Differential Surface Stress Sensor
A dual cantilever sensor was developed for high-resolution measurement of surface stress to be used in the detection of chemical and biological species. The performance of the differential surface stress sensor was characterised through measurement of surface stress associated with alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) formation and DNA hybridization. Direct detection of differential surface stress eliminates the influence of environmental disturbances.

The surface stress sensor is also amenable for miniaturization on a single MEMS device, the sensitivity of the measurements is not dependent on the distance between the sensing surface and detector, and the sensor is able to measure in liquid and ambient environments.
